Melnik and surroundings
The dominant feature of the town of Mělník is the chateau with the Church of St. Peter and Paul, which rises above the confluence of the rivers. From the castle there is a beautiful view of the surrounding region, where you can not overlook the mountain Říp and the Czech Central Mountains with the highest mountain Milešovka. In the church you will also find the second largest ossuary in Bohemia. From the historical part of the castle you can walk to the square, which is dominated by the town hall with a museum and a fountain. Mělník is also famous for growing vines. The first vineyards were founded here in the 14th century by Charles IV. And to this day, his arrival in Mělník during the vintage, which takes place at the end of summer, is welcomed here. Vintage is visited by thousands of lovers of this delicious drink every year. The area of the square offers itself to other large events that take place here throughout the year.
Two popular landscape areas Liběchovsko and Kokořínsko are a sought-after destination for nature lovers. They are five kilometers away from Mělník. These areas are very suitable for lovers of hiking and biking. They attract with their rock scenery such as Pokličky, Skalní bludiště, but also artificially created rock sculptures called Devil's Head, Harfenice and Had, created by giant sizes Mr. Levý in the 19th century. Kokořín is dominated by Kokořín Castle, which was never recharged, and Houska Castle. Below the chateau is the spring of the Pšovka stream, which flows through the entire Kokořín valley. In the middle of the valley, a natural swimming pool Harasov creates a dam on the creek. Hiking trails are well marked in both areas.
