Šumava
represents an extensive mountain range in southwestern Bohemia on the border with Austria and Germany. On the Czech side, it has the character of mountain plains with extensive peat bogs and smoothly rising mountain ridges.
The highest points of the Šumava on the border ridge reach heights above 1300 m above sea level. The highest peaks are Plechý (1378), Trojmezná (1361), Boubín (1362), Jezerní hora (1343).
There is a large number in Šumava peat bogs, whose total area is about 5.000 ha. Towards the interior, Šumava passes in Šumava foothills and in the east in Novohradské mountains with altitudes of about 1000 m above sea level - Libín (1096), Kleť (1083), Javorník (1089), Běleč (922), Poluška (919), Myslivna (1049), Vysoká (1034), Kamenec (1072). The forest consists mainly of spruce and small remnants of mixed forest, where beeches are most often represented.
Some famous rivers spring on the ridges of the Šumava mountains - Vltava, Lužnice, Otava, Volyňka, Blanice, Úhlava. In the Boubín Forest there are several lakes of glacial origin - Plešné Lake, Devil's Lake and Black Lake, which with its area of 18,4 ha is one of the largest lakes in our country.
Šumava belongs to the protected areas in the Czech Republic and with its area of 163.000 ha is the largest protected area in the Czech Republic. During our century, several nature reserves were gradually established in Šumava - Vltava meadow, Vyšenské hills (Český Krumlov), Devil's wall (Loučovice), Zátoňská mountain, Trojmezná mountain, Kepelské wetlands, Hamižná, Boubín forest, Mrtvý l uh, Jezerná slať, Rokytná slať . The most famous of these nature reserves is Boubín forest. It lies at the foot of Mount Boubín at 920 - 1110 m. Its current area is 666 ha. The "core" of the forest consists of the best-preserved remnants of the original extensive Šumava mountain mixed forests, the so-called "border forest". The oldest spruces and firs are about 300-400 years old. The largest boubín spruce, which fell in 1970, had a height of 57,2 m and a circumference of 508 cm. The number of other trees with unusual growth deformations will certainly attract the attention of visitors. Around the core of the forest there is a circular nature trail - 8 stops, 3,8 km long.
