A trip to the mythical Crete

All articles_button

We made some trips by air, but even there we did not sit in one place so at least in short what is worth seeing in Crete. We stayed on the north coast near the capital city of Heraklion. A decent hotel, but nothing to fit on your ass. We bought it in the last minute, and because we wanted to get to know the island, it was basically what it looked like. The very first day we went around a few rentals in the area, which are plenty. I had the idea that we needed offroad because we would go outside the tourist spots. So we took Suzuky Jimmy ..

I will advise you, you do not need offroad, but a small handy car with low consumption. Jump on everywhere offered by Suzuka Jimmy. The car cannot be safely closed, which is still a minor problem because nothing has ever disappeared but the wind in the hair is worse. It may look good in the film, but the draft and the roosting sun on the back of the neck is not as romantic as it seems.

First way led, of course, to nearby Knossos. It is a historic landmark where the Minotaura maze was. Everybody knows Greek history, so I'm not going to write more about it. I recommend coming here an ideal blow until it's so hot because there is not much shade here. Anyway, I definitely recommend the visit. The road continued southwards across the island to the so-called hippie beaches. Along the way I saw a turning towards the sea through the sand dunes. I have offroad so we go riding. Hmmm, never go to a dry riverbed unless you have an offroad experience. Then it was my first experience with offroad and so it turned out. I dropped on the chassis and, at noon, dug the car by hand on the roasting sun because I didn't even have a scoop. The fact that it would help me blow out the tires I did not even seem and the weak gasoline engine is also probably the worst choice for offroad. After the Mitsubischi experience, I am already smart, but then it was a baptism of fire. Luckily we got out of here somewhere and we came to a beautiful boredom beach. We were pleased, undressed and rested for a few hours after a chore from the car. In the evening we moved to a hippie beach that was down the hill. We rocked the caves in the rocks where Hipi lived and enjoyed the waves on the beach. The return to the hotel was after dark, but it was a nice day that taught me a lot.

Second day we chose to supposedly the most beautiful beach on Krete. Vai Beach is considered to be the Caribbean Mediterranean and not a fire that recently burned many palm trees would be a truly magical place. On the way here we stopped at one nice monastery and because I am inconsolable so I again turned out of the way and we got under the windmills and herds of ubiquitous goats. This time it was a good idea and we saved a lot of time and serpentine that lead to Vai. We have not stayed on the beach for a long time because it is pure commerce. Back we chose the south coast and on the way we stopped on a beautiful beach with black stones. Here we enjoyed it until the evening and again returned to the hotel with the center of the island.

Another way led towards Samaria. It is a long canyon that ends at the moth and people mostly move it from north to sea. We chose the opposite way, so we avoided about a million turns in the town of Loutra, from where we sailed to the end of the Samaras and walked a few kilometers up and then back. I guess we went halfway and rich enough. Of course, tourists who do not manage to take it down here can go down the horse canyon. We waited for the return ferry on the beach, which fell well after the hike in the heat. After returning to the car we went to the north coast towards Retimone. It is a historic port city that we have seen in the dark as Samaria is on a day trip.

Another scheduled trip headed for Spinalonga. It is an island where lepers lived and brought here ships that function as taxis. On this island they took away all those who fell ill for this disease and lived their lives here. It's a special place, but it's definitely worth seeing. On the way back we stopped at one tourist resort where we stayed for some time and then enjoyed a little night life.

In the rental shop from which we had Jimmi, the friendly owner made an irresistible offer for a small Peugeot 108 so we had a motorcycle and a car one day. The 108 had a climate and fumes. The next day we spent wandering on the northern coast around Lerapetra. We found several almost empty beaches and one completely deserted beach where we enjoyed sunbathing without a swimsuit and then I discovered a buoy with about 50 rope which I brought to my home and use it for example for a swing for Leonardo. When I moved back I turned again and discovered a fantastic place where we were almost alone. The water was clear and the sea warm. Beautiful place.

The next day we said we had enough sun and we'd go inland. There is a cave where Zeus and a plateau where windmills are supposedly born, and artists who produce various art objects. Not that we want to buy something, but it's worth it. There are two paths to the cave and it is quite a hike so let the natives like you do not go the sun all the time. One way up and another down and you'll be calm. The cave is quite nice and it is quite cold especially when you come out of the roasting sun. The plateau is also worth seeing and you can bypass it all around. There's a lot of cyclists, and because it's basically flat, it can be nice. For the next two days we were planning to stay just on the north coast and relax from traveling.

After ten days we left Crete, saying that it is a wonderful island and people are very nice here. They do not consider themselves Greeks, but Cretans. We were there when our government refused financial aid to Greece, and nobody looked at us in a bad way. I'm sure to come back to Crete with my family. Use the map, there are places worth seeing.
