Cimburk u Koryčan - the ancient king of the Chribes

Last spring I took my husband on a small trip to Chřiby. He's never been there, which is incomprehensible to me, because he's always been here a bit. On the contrary, I spent my childhood in Chřiby thanks to scout camps. And I'm grateful for that. I always have a nostalgic mood here. But then the sensible voice in my head sounds and says, “Girl, come to your senses! What will you do when you're 50? ”“ Yeah. So back to reality and shit on here ruins of a castle named Cimburk! Because we didn't have much time for the trip, we went to Cimburk from the parking lot "near Křížek." From there it is less than 2 kilometers along the yellow tourist sign to the castle. The path leads through the forest and you can walk along it relatively well with a pram. About halfway there you can refresh yourself with water from a local well, so don't forget the tin, for example, so you can taste it.

Look, there's nothing there!

After about 30 minutes we are almost at the finish line. Along the way, we meet a group of people in the opposite direction, which Cimburk did not inspire much. We easily recognized it from the sentence: "Look, isn't there anything they wanted money for?" Well, who would have expected that there wouldn't be much to see on the ruins. They were supposed to come here sometime in the 14th century, and they wouldn't be surprised. But no one has built a working time machine yet. And so our imagination must suffice.

Of course, it's a matter of opinion, but I think there's a lot to see at Cimburk. Compared to other ruins, where you can only find one torso of a wall, Cimburk is a "luxury." They did a piece of work both on the static securing of the remains of buildings and on the cleaning of the surroundings and repairs of the most necessary things.

A significant fortress of the Luxembourg period

Cimburk was one of the important strategic fortresses. It was built sometime between 1327 and 1333 by Bernard of Cimburk, a provincial chamberlain in the service of John of Luxembourg. The owners took turns at the castle on a treadmill, but each of them carried out some minor reconstruction. Cimburk lost its significance at the end of the 17th century and at the beginning of the 18th century it is already mentioned in books as desolate.

What can you see in Cimburk?

The tour of the castle is individual. At the box office you will get a text about the history of the castle and you can go. You don't have to read the text, you can just walk around and imagine what the castle palace, the massive defensive tower, the castle bastion, the chapel or the fence looked like before. I always choose this variant on the ruins. I usually read the history information in advance.

It's nice that a number of events also take place in Cimburk during the high season. I can only recommend a visit to the festival of small breweries, the castle broom, the castle night, the day of the muses with a demonstration of medieval crafts or various fencing afternoons. The entrance fee, which is collected at events, goes to save the castle. As well as regular admission.

There is always a band playing at every event, which will give the specific event the right smirk. For example, a dulcimer also plays on the castle's wine tasting. Boys playing in traditional costumes in the middle of medieval ruins are a stone. And the various dance creations of visitors dressed in medieval clothes are priceless. And nobody cares! The crazier, the better. J

And if you don't want to go home from an event, you can sleep. Either in the woods in a tent or directly in the castle grounds in a building there. Don't worry, the local castle buildings have a roof.

Every season, various repairs and modifications take place in Cimburk. If you feel like it, you can also add a hand to the work. There are never enough volunteers. I myself took part in working weekends several times. And right at my first participation, we managed to discover the foundations of the original entrance gate from the 14th century while clearing a small patch. So if you are a lover of torsional architecture and amateur archaeologists, come add a hand to the work! It's worth it.
