Hooray for Bezděz Castle! - a tip for a family trip to Liberec

All articles_button

As I wrote last time (well, it's been more than a year), when I mainly wake up to a terribly brilliant idea, my husband has no choice but to go on a more or less amazing trip with me. And last autumn, and I remember exactly that, because on the way to the castle we collected fallen nuts, so we went to Bezděz Castle. It was my first time, so I was full of expectations…

After an hour of driving, we arrived in the castle grounds, where we parked and set off. And literally. Because the road to the castle is quite steep, rocky, sometimes it leads along the former wall and also during it you have to climb stone steps. So nothing much for small children, not to mention strollers. And I suspect that cycling is also prohibited. And in fact, it was only during the ascent that I realized the absurdity of the story I had once heard. Some time ago, it is said that someone organized a trip for seniors to Bezděz Castle. It is said that from a full bus, only a handful of the most capable participants got to the top of the hill and thus to the destination of the trip. The others remained scattered on the route and had to return. So they saw only a small or larger part of the stony path from the whole trip. And they spent the rest of the time on the bus waiting for able fellow travelers who got to the top :-). But if that's really true, I don't know, but as I heard, I'm passing on. Otherwise, however, the output is worth it. Firstly, because during the trip you can look around from a great height into the surroundings, and the views are breathtaking, but also because the whole castle looks monumental.

The Gothic castle was built in the 13th century during the reign of Přemysl Otakar II. After his death, his widow and seven-year-old son Václav were imprisoned here. At the end of the 18th century, the castle was abandoned. But a hundred years later it was gradually restored.

And whoever was careful at school certainly remembers that Bezdězem was inspired by Karel Hynek Mácha when writing Mája.

There are currently no guided guided tours available, so you need to take an individual guided tour. During it you can see the Royal Palace, the castle chapel, the Burgrave's Palace and the Manx palaces. Definitely do not miss the ascent to the Great Tower, because the views from the tower gallery are beautiful. You can have a snack in the kiosk directly at the castle or in the village in the castle grounds.

If you plan to visit Bezděz during the holidays, I definitely recommend it to everyone. And if one cultural experience is not enough for you, you can combine the trip with the 5th year of the Theater Summer under Bezděz Castle. Until the end of August, you can catch two more performances in the summer amphitheater in the central part of the village of Bezděz. On August 15, Madame Colomb intervenes and on August 22 Strange love. So, hooray for Bezděz! cheeky

If you would like to stay longer, I enclose accommodation in the immediate vicinity ... wink
