On this year's trip to the Karwendel Mountains on the border between Germany and Austria, I had the opportunity to test some interesting outdoor accessories. So here they are ...
Magnesia chair
Not that I didn't know this tweak, but I wondered how it would be different from what I've used so far. The magnesium rod I got for testing at first glance looks more robust than other types. It is not sealed in a plastic handle, as usual, but it is a separate piece. It includes a metal piece with a loop for hanging, with which you create sparks. The fact that the two components are separated in the end, however, is not detrimental. You can attach the scraper to the key ring or anywhere else and insert the magnesium rod to the stove or elsewhere. Some types of knives even have holsters where space is available for a magnesium flintlock. It is very easy to use.
Slowly move the metal blade over the bar, away from each other, creating sparks with a temperature of up to 3000 ° C. And here I was pleasantly surprised for the first time. I don't know if this stick has a higher proportion of magnesium or a different composition, but compared to the models I used before, the formation of sparks was easy, they were created even with a small pressure of the slice on the surface of the stick. From the first use. For some other types, the top black layer first had to be scraped off a little before sparks began to form. Here it was immediate and easy not only with the supplied slice but also with the edge of the knife. And what good will a magnesium flint be to you? It is primarily intended for fire distribution and survival use. However, do not imagine that it works similarly to a lighter or a match. Thorough preparation is required when lighting a fire with a flintlock. It is best to finely grind a piece of stump stick, fine birch bark, straw and / or paper without sparks and then light this material with sparks from as close a distance as possible. We moved in the Alps in the terrain, where, of course, the fire must not spread, so the flint was used for a much simpler purpose.
This is the ignition of gas tourist cookers, which goes with these throttles really great. I really recommend wearing something like this in a case near the stove . You don't have to deal with a damp or dysfunctional lighter or matches. The advantage of a magnesia chair is that it sparkles and wet, can be used in frost and strong wind. And you always have something ready to light the stove and when it is needed, to make a fire. You can get firesteel chairs here in e-shop jatagan.eu .
Paracord Bracelet
Another thing I took with me, but which passed me for a long time, is a paracord bracelet. It is a bracelet on a hand braided from several meters of high-quality parachute (hence the name paracord) cord. I had the opportunity to try two, in the end I chose the one that fit better on my wrist.
This manufacturer makes bracelets for different hand sizes and of course in many colors. In this case it was a simple model, a purely braided line without compass, throttle or other conveniences.
At both ends there is only a small plastic buckle to fasten. It should be added that the wear does not push, the bracelet spontaneously unfastened every 3 days of testing. The main task of paracord bracelets is to solve crisis situations.
Cord paracord bracelet has a load capacity of about 200 kg. Of course, this does not mean that you can not climb the rocks, but in tension, it is really exceptionally durable for hanging. The only thing you have to reconcile with is that once you untangle the bracelet, you don't usually get it back. But if you save your trip or health, you will surely forgive him.
