Safety of campervan and crew

I am a realist, so I do not see the world in which I live in pink or black. Every traveler has a bit of a measure of risk tolerance, because otherwise he couldn't go on a trip to the unknown without worrying about sleep. I did not realize it if our travels did not begin to comment on our acquaintances and unknowns. It is said that we are not afraid to sleep somewhere in the middle of the forest or in an abandoned place. Radical escalated after we started traveling with Leonardo. For most people incomprehensible as we can go on a trip to Greece by car with a nine-month-old child and not have secured accommodation at least in a four-star hotel.

The child has the least problem on the way. Leonard in his four years graduated in the car two times Croatia, two times Greece, Montenegro, Sardinia and Corsica, skiing in the Austrian Alps, Tuscany and Morocco. I do not speak about trips in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Austria because it is a jump. :-) Believe me, our baby asks every time we go and where we go. I am very much looking forward to this because I know that if she grows up she will not be afraid to go into the world.

I realize the risk on the road and respect it. We rely heavily on intuition on the road. If we park somewhere and we do not feel good about it, we would rather move at night if it is possible. This post will be about the moments when it is not possible. In such cases I use both passive and active protection of our car and of course my family. Passive protection means that the car itself protects us.

Alarm

Mercedes has many things really good. The car alarm can be set differently. E.g. if you are transporting a car on a ferry, it is useful to turn off the motion sensor to keep the car from booming during a more turbulent voyage. It is also very useful to disable the indoor monitoring function. When we sleep we always lock the car with the key to make the alarm active. He would, however, start any movement in the car so I switch off this sensor button on the ceiling. You say a little thing, but useful. It has already happened to us that at night we were awakened by an alarm and I saw someone running away from the car. Apparently he had to pull the handle or try something with the locks. Anyway thanks for the active alarm during sleep.

Clamping straps

It's simple in simplicity and that's why I like the solution that locks the door from the inside. All you need is a quick-release gurtna that you tap between the door holders, plus I add a sliding door handle. I tried to open it from the outside and don't really move the door. You would have to break the window if you wanted to get into the car. The assumption is that, in conjunction with the alarm, every attempt to enter the car will fail and, in addition, the alarm will wake us up. I sometimes use this hedge when I stand where I am not sure about safety during the day. Of course, it does not provide pushers, but I do not have active door locks on the pushers as well as on the trunk. Moreover, this security does not occupy any space and you can use the straps to attach anything to the roof and the like.

Half-open windows

You need to circulate the air while standing, but also while sleeping in the car. I have a deflector on the front windows and the rear windows are hinged. You can't get your hand in the car through a single gap so you can open it. I believe that clever thieves know the tricks to get there, but I don't think the risk can ever be completely eliminated. You just have to minimize it. In addition, we use fans in the side window while standing, which have proved very useful for cooling. When I insert the board with them instead of the window and secure it with a handle against moving up, it is not possible to remove it from the outside without breaking it. It's probably easier to break the front window, because the panel is made of aluminum. We have dark foils on the rear windows and, in addition, curtains, and on the front windows we have thermal foils on the inside, which were made to measure for us, so it is not visible from the inside and also protects us from light and heat. So far, it has not happened to us that we found damage, even though we left the car unattended all day and it was still ventilated. Here, too, it is valid to use common sense and I do not park in places where it does not seem safe at first glance.

Locking compartment

Because I admit the risk that someone can get into the car so valuable things I usually have, and I put other things in the front locker in front of the passenger, which can be locked. Clearly, it's not a big deal to break her off, but as I said the risk I'm trying to minimize and not completely eliminate. You've been messing with the idea of a safe under the driver's seat for a long time, but I haven't done it yet.

Legal and health protection

We spend a lot of time on the road and it is sad that we have to pay lawyers who protect me from the state. The police are paid by the state, so they are my employees because they only live because of my taxes. The DAS is a legal protection that has helped me on a number of occasions in dealing with conflict matters mostly with the police. The big advantage is that it has a pan-European operation so it solves the situation even during my travels. Probably everyone has already known that they do not know how and what they are paying in another country and then it is good to have a 24hod friend on the phone to help you.

Health insurance

While we are in the EU and within that, you can use a European policyholder card, but this is only true in state hospitals. You will not find them everywhere and when you find them you will usually leave for a private doctor. Read how we marched in Greece. But for private you do not pay the insured card and believe me you do not want to pay for it. I have paid my employer a year-long health insurance abroad from Kooperativa, because I sometimes go outside Slovakia for business. I have risky sports like skiing and diving so I am taken care of.

My family is taken care of thanks to a credit card that provides me with crew and other things, such as luggage, for active use. We are not married to Veronica so the crew is ideal for us. It basically covers anyone who is demonstrably on the road with us. I used it multiple times for Leonard, and it was always a problem. I didn't pay anything once. The insurance company solved everything itself. The only thing that is interested in returning back is whether you have not been continuously longer than 90dní outside of the SK because this insurance does not cover you. Sometimes it is complicated to prove that the child was in Slovakia at some time. An adult goes to work, but if a child does not go to kindergarten and is not often ill, there is basically no record that he is in the SK. And the insurance company can ask you for such a confirmation retroactively after half a year. Since we are not in Šengen when crossing the border, you will not get a passport stamp. You may get the first one to Hungary's borders, but it does not prove that you were previously in Slovakia. It's a little head-on like everything that has something to do with insurance, but it's probably already used to it.

Car insurance

I don't have this yet. I do not want to pay accident and I have some towing to 200EURO and similar small things in the insurance, but I do not think it would help me in case of a big car problem. Anyway, before every long trip I have my car checked by a friend of mine and we have always been able to return. On Mitsubishi from Romania with one brake off, from Italy with alternator rewind and from Greece without servo, but we have always come home ... :-) Maco has no problem with one defect so far.

Active protection is something I hope never happens

At Mitsubishi, I had a telescopic baton that confiscated me in Switzerland, and in addition, 400eur was fined for unauthorized possession of the weapon. I still haven't paid it to them and they have withdrawn the prosecution after my appeal. Anyway, I have been avoiding Switzerland since then. This world is twisted. Hammer, ax or machete is not a weapon. It can be bought in any craft shop, but a telescope that is a defensive tool is a weapon that you must not hold. But when someone attacks you, you can complain. The situation in Europe shows us the meaning of such a complaint.

I have a machete in the car since I have been driving and has never been a problem with it. Even when it almost fell on the head of a Croatian customs officer when the rear door was opened. I wouldn't have cut the blood at that time, but since his colleagues started laughing, it went through. Anyway, I can't imagine fighting anyone with a machete. While I was alone, I didn't deal with it, but when a person has a family, they need to be protected.

Sprays

I have a small capsaicin spray at hand in my car that has 3m reach. In addition, it does not spray steam, but droplets, so I should not parallel myself even against the mild wind. I take it with me even when we go on a hike as a protection from animals. I don't know if he would stop the bear, but at least I feel like I'm not completely defenseless. The spray is small, hiding it in the palm of your hand so that the attacker does not overlook that you have something. In addition, it has an LED light. The moment of surprise is on your side. Moreover, it is easier to hide in the car after experience from Switzerland.

Paralizer

The same logic as the spray was working. It must be inconspicuous, so it is a flashlight with a paralizer. I carried her already in a large baggage on a plane to Morocco or Brazil and no one stopped at her. Once we got a great idea at one party to try it out, so I can say I can't stand it for more than two seconds. He gives bombs properly and I think he would do his part. There is also an important moment of surprise. I don't have to hide it in the car, and I don't think anyone thinks it's for anything but lighting. Of course, it shines well.

Siren

When everything fails to call for help, and as loudly as possible. Then we use a multifunctional flashlight, which, in addition to light in hand, also provides a table light when you want to sit by the car in the evening. It can be recharged via built-in Solar, Manual Dynamo or USB. It even has a USB output so you can charge your phone. Solar is weak on smartphones, but the dynamo can do it. It also has a built-in radio and veeeel loud siren that would probably wake up the entire parking lot. I don't know what more could be put into one thing, but the Chinese will definitely lose something. :-)

So much about our security on the go. winkcheekycool
