Tobogganing in Germany at the foot of the Ore Mountains

All articles_button

In one of the previous articles, I advised you where you can go sledding in the Austrian Alps. But not everyone goes on a winter holiday to this mountain range. So if you are going to spend your winter vacation in the Czech Republic, but enjoy alpine fun, read the following lines. Try to plan skiing in our westernmost mountains - the Ore Mountains. Apart from the fact that you have great skiing here, you will literally find yourself on the border with Germany. And there are other benefits. In December 2018, the Neklid ski resort merged with the well-known Klínovec resort, creating a giant center with 34 km of pistes. To this you can add another 10 km in the Saxon resort of Fichtelberg - Oberwiesenthal. Under the once highest mountain of the former East Germany, there is not only a modern center for skiers, but from the 1210 m high peak there is also a modified toboggan run.

Due to the fact that Oberwiesenthal is located only about 2 km beyond the CZ border, you can easily get here from any center in the Ore Mountains and for example from Boží Dar it is literally "behind the beech".

And how do you get to start the toboggan run? The first option is to go to the city and leave the car at one of the parking lots. The second one is to go right past the former Czech customs house to the left and drive up to the top of Fichgtelberg mountain. There is also a large car park, hotel, restaurant and there are also ski lifts and cable cars. If you take advantage of this parking option, which is similar to the car park in the valley approx. 2-3 eur / day, you can just sitout on a sleigh and enjoy an adventure.

The toboggan run - Rodelbahn starts right next to the hotel behind the car park and measures almost 2 km. After a light start, a sharper passage follows, where the soles of your braking shoes get caught. Then you enter the spruce forest and a few serpentines, you get to the middle of the track, where a rarity awaits you, which we have not seen on other tracks. At this point, the track is interrupted by a roadblock and warning signs. Here you have to get off and transport the red piste with the sledge. Carefully, as if crossing the road, you cross the ski slope and you can indulge in sledding again. The biggest adrenaline rush is going through corners at higher speeds, which usually ends with the overturning of the sleigh and the entire crew with the Huron laughter of other riders. It should be added that this toboggan run is really safe, there are no rocks and steep ravines around it, so you only need to watch out for other toboggans and trees. In any case, you will not spoil anything with a helmet, at least for children.

A little wilder is just the end, where you go down the forest down the meadow to the snow road behind which there is already a local little busy road. Here you have to take the sled for the strap and move it to the Fichtelberdbahn valley station. The journey is not long or challenging. Although it looks like 500 m, but a good half of them are mirroring another downhill through a wide meadow.

Below you have to wait for the old cabin cable car, which runs in the pair from Fichtelberg and in the season is very busy. It only depends on how many rides you can handle, how much time you'll fill with riding, or relaxing with bratwurst and coffee.
