At the end of June, on our way to sunny Italy, we visited the large Austrian camp Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, which is located by Lake Wörthersee in the federal state of Carinthia. Here are the insights from our one-day visit. Austrian campsites are always at a high level.
This was also true in the case of the Klagenfurt am Wörthersee campsite, which is widely used by tourists, as it is a short distance from the exit of the main highway that leads from Graz to the Italian border. Although the camp is not far from the highway, it is situated in beautiful nature. Everywhere you look, there are beautiful green hills that reach a height of 600 to 800 meters above sea level. In addition, there is a large lake where you can swim or go boating.
Great Lake Wörthersee
The main added value of the campsite is Lake Wörthersee, which is the largest lake in the Austrian state of Carinthia and the fifth largest lake in Austria. Thanks to underground springs, it reaches up to twenty-eight degrees Celsius in the summer months, so you can swim here in the summer. Otherwise, it is the warmest lake in the Alps. The beautiful area around the lake is great for an undemanding, sporty holiday. Here you can enjoy hiking, water sports, swimming, nature trips, cycling or the popular Nordic walking.
Possibility of camping accommodation
- Places for caravans and motorhomes
- areas for own tents
Sanitary facilities to excellent
The camp is divided into several sections, which are marked with letters, from the letter A to the letter I. The sanitary facilities were modern and clean. It was cleaned every day from 12 to 14 p.m. In addition to toilets, showers and sinks for dishes, there were also low basins for washing feet. I was also impressed by the large freezer box, which was available free of charge to all camp clients. Each cabin was properly marked not only with a German inscription, but also with an English one and even a pictograph, so that it was clear to recognize the women's and men's cabins, the cabin for washing dishes, etc.
Buffet at the reception
If you don't cook for yourself at the campsite, you can use the local buffet at the campsite reception, where you can buy something to eat in addition to drinks. The buffet with a large outdoor seating area, where there were also large red umbrellas, was open every day from 17:23 to 7:20. In addition to German, you can also communicate in English at the reception without any problems. There was also a bank machine in the campsite. There was also a small supermarket behind the reception called Der Shop, where you could get pastries and basic food. The supermarket is open here from XNUMX a.m. to XNUMX p.m.
Sports facilities
There was a beautiful mini-golf course in the campsite area. There is also a relatively large area for children, where you can find swings and climbing frames. One part of the children's playground is covered with sand, so this surface minimizes major injuries to children.
Remarkable Europapark
About one kilometer in front of the Wörthersee lakefront is the Europapark, which consists of a large, freely accessible meadow where local residents go to play football or baseball. However, Europapark also includes a skate park or a large chessboard. You can relax pleasantly on the benches or on the sunny shore of the wonderful pond. For the young, there is a large children's playground, which is guaranteed to keep both young and old children entertained.
Tips for trips
Those who are not too sporty can definitely visit historic Klagenfurt, where a large portion of the city's museums and beautiful churches await you. The largest and most widely known museum here is the Landesmuseum Kärnten, which is Carinthia's national museum of culture and natural sciences. Modern art enthusiasts can visit the Museum Moderner Kunst Kärnten instead. The Stadtgalerie, which is the city gallery, is also interesting. Klagenfurt's most famous church is St. Jiljí, which has a 91,7 meter high tower, from which there is a beautiful view of the wide surroundings. However, the beautiful interior, where you will find ceiling frescoes and a beautiful baroque pulpit, is definitely worth a visit.
