Experience of the campsite with pool Le Balze Volterra - Tuscany in Italy

All articles_button

Another Italian campsite we visited on our trip to Italy last year was Camping Le Balze Volterra. It was an urban campsite near the smaller Italian town of Volterra in western Tuscany. Volterra is a remarkable walled city that currently has around 11 inhabitants. We were in the camp for one night and in the afternoon we wanted to visit the historic city itself, which is famous for its mining and processing of alabaster. In addition, Volterra is a small, peaceful Tuscan town, which still has beautiful Etruscan walls.

A beautiful view of the fortified Volterra from the campsite

As usual, the campsite was located outside the city, in this case it was a ten minute walk to the city. From the campsite there was a beautiful view of the majestic Volterra, which is completely surrounded by walls. Another nice sight was the rather tall brick church of Santi Giusti e Clemente, which was almost adjacent to our campsite. wink

Camping with older equipment

The surroundings of Camping Le Balze Volterra looked nice, the whole thing Tuscany is beautiful, but overall everything in the camp was very outdated and shabby. The places for campers and caravans were well marked and we could choose our own place to stay. There was a classic swimming pool in the camp, but swimming in it was again required with a swimming cap, so we bought a cap for three euros at the camp reception. I also noticed some game elements for children, a classic table tennis table and foosballs. Everything is already very old and worn. The camp, however, had a rental electric bike.

Accommodation at Le Balze Volterra campsite

The camp had very old sanitary facilities, which were clean, but there was no toilet paper in the toilets and no liquid soap in the washrooms. That's why the price of this campsite seemed a bit excessive. The price was €40 for one night for two people, including tent and car, which compared to other camps did not correspond to the quality of the camp. What I appreciated in the camp, on the other hand, were the special sinks for the feet, which you will not see in the Czech Republic. If you only have dusty feet from the sand, you don't need to take a shower, just put one foot and then the other in the sink on the floor and your limbs are quickly rinsed.

Refreshments in the camp

At the campsite, there was a small kiosk with fast food at the reception smiley. Anyone who wanted could order fresh pastries or fresh butter croissants, which are the main food for breakfast in Italy, the next day.

Tips for trips around the camp

In the vicinity of the campsite there are many possibilities for short trips to the beautiful surroundings of the hilly Tuscany. The roads here directly invite you to wonderful cycling trips or training on the road Yes. However, we didn't have any bikes with us, so we went to explore the historic city behind the Etruscan walls. We were thrilled by the small town. Especially the walks around the medieval walls, which were created in the 4th century before Christ, were romantic. The Roman theater from the 1st century BC was also famous, where you can take beautiful photos. However, the main draw was the alabaster museum that enticed us. The tour of the museum also included the entrance to the main cathedral and the baptistery, which had an octagonal floor plan. The museum of snow-white alabaster disappointed us a bit, I expected more from it, in the end everything was saved by the breathtaking cathedral. We were in it longer than in the alabaster museum itself.

Even the cathedral is actually one big art museum. The interior of the cathedral itself is a beautiful piece of art, as it is divided into twenty-two columns with stucco, faithfully simulating the appearance of pink granite. The real jewel of the interior, however, is above all the beautiful coffered ceiling above the nave and transept, which dates from the 16th century. The Renaissance wooden ceiling is a nice collection of not only geometric elements, but also decorative floral patterns and figures of Christian saints. heart
