Frýdlant is our northernmost castle. Its origin is connected with the powerful noble family of Ronovici, who in the 13th century built a Gothic castle on a basalt ridge above the Směda river.
In the 16th century, during the reign of the noble Reder family, castle Renaissance buildings decorated with sgraffitos were added, creating a unique combination of two architectural styles.
The history of the castle and chateau, as well as of the entire north of Bohemia, had a significant impact on the figure of the warlord Albert of Valdštejn, who was promoted to Duke of Frýdlant, and it was Frýdlant Castle that became the seat of the entire Duchy of Frýdlant.
In 1801, the Clam-Gallas noble family made a part of the castle accessible, and the castle thus became the oldest castle museum in Central Europe.
Today, Frýdlant castle and chateau are among the most important and most visited monuments in our country, mainly thanks to their richly equipped interiors and beautiful surroundings.
For example, you can visit the castle museum here, which focuses on the Thirty Years' War and the person of Albrecht of Valdštejn, as well as the armory, the castle chapel of St. Annie and the collection of pipes. In the completely unique castle kitchen, you can get an idea of how cooking was done at the castle.
You can view the works of Baroque masters in the castle gallery, and you can also admire collections of porcelain, glass and period furniture at the castle.
