A Gothic fortress stood in the city, which was later rebuilt into a Renaissance and Baroque castle. In the middle of the 19th century, the Baroque castle was completely demolished, and today's romantic Neo-Gothic castle was built in its place.
Although the castle is not open to the public, you should definitely visit the castle park. Here grows a large-leaved linden tree, whose age is estimated at 900 years and is therefore among the oldest trees in Moravia. Emperor Rudolf II is said to have rested in the shade of this linden tree while visiting Bzenc.
During the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, a wind blew the tree into nine parts, which are supported today and reach a height of up to 25 m. The popular local wine Bzenecká lipka with its golden color was also named after this linden tree.
Another well-known wine from Bzenec is called Zlatý hrozen, and the sparkling wine brand Chateau Bzenec is also announced. In 1875, the production of sparkling wines using the classic method was established in Bzenec, the first in the Czech lands. Winemaking in Bzenec has a very old tradition, the first vineyards are mentioned as far back as 1371.
A baroque Marian column stands on Náměstí Svobody. In Bzenec, a number of houses of the former Jewish quarter, in the area between the castle and Freedom Square, and the Jewish cemetery have also been preserved. Baroque church of St. John the Baptist can be found east of the square and next to him stands the column of the Holy Trinity from the beginning of the 20th century.
