Castle in Zákupy

All articles_button

The castle in Zákupy has a famous history. Already in the 14th century, there was a fortress here, on the site of which in the 16th century the owner of the estate, Zdislav Berka from Dubé, had a Renaissance castle built. In the 17th century, the castle was rebuilt into a magnificent Baroque residence.

In 1815, the Congress of Vienna was looking for how to take care of the noble boy Orlík, who was the son of the defeated Napoleon Bonaparte and the Habsburg princess Maria Luisa.

The Zákup estate was thus elevated to the Zákup duchy, and Orlík became the Zákup duke. However, he never visited his new duchy and died very young in 1832 at the age of just 21.

In 1848, the Zákup estate became the private property of the Austrian emperor and the last crowned Czech king, Ferdinand V. The castle in Zákup, like the castle in Ploskovice, served the emperor as a summer residence.

Renowned artists such as the sculptor Václav Levý, who participated in the repair of the stucco decoration, and the romantic painter Josef Navrátil came to work at the castle under Emperor Ferdinand.

He designed the entire concept of decoration and equipment at the castle, including wallpaper, decorative fabrics and furniture, and he decorated the castle with beautiful ceiling paintings. Emperor Ferdinand V died in 1875. However, the castle in Zákupy continued to be the occasional residence of members of the Austrian imperial family.

In 1876, the Austrian Emperor Francis Joseph I met with the Russian Tsar Alexander II at the castle.

The castle in Zákupy is a luxurious imperial summer residence. Here, for example, you can see the representative and private rooms of Emperor Ferdinand V and his wife Marie Anne of Savoy.

There is also an apartment in the Biedermeier style, reminiscent of Orlík, Duke of Zákupské. The castle also has the inn rooms of the Habsburgs.

In the castle chapel of St. Francis of Assisi was married in 1900 by the heir to the throne, Archduke Francis Ferdinand d'Este, and Countess Žofie Chotková, who was assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914.
