The market settlement in the castle grounds, later named after Jindřich, grew rapidly and by the end of the 13th century it was already referred to as a town. The favorable location of the city, on the trade route from Vienna to Prague, contributed to the flourishing of trade. Jindřichův Hradec, this rich vassal city, was one of the largest cities in Bohemia and famous especially for the production of high-quality cloth. The town is dominated by the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is a beautiful example of South Bohemian Gothic. The church houses a rare baptismal font from the first half of the 16th century and a Gothic statue of the Madonna. The church tower is open to the public and offers a nice view of the ancient city and the charming landscape of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands.
The Gothic chapel of St. Nicholas. A part of the city walls has also been preserved near the monastery. On Balbín square stands the building of the former Renaissance Jesuit college with a sgraffito facade, courtyard and arcades. In the chapel of St. Mary Magdalene is rich in baroque, stucco decoration. It has its headquarters on Balbín Square, in the Renaissance building of the former Jesuit seminary Museum in Jindřichov Hradec. There is a unique collection of mostly Gothic sculptures and a unique set of painted sharpshooter targets and target weapons. Visitors can also see Emma Destin's hall and Kryz's manger, the largest mechanical nativity scene in the world. Not far from the museum stands the only well-preserved city gate called Nežárecká from the second half of the 15th century.
The Malý and Velký Vajgar ponds are divided by the Vajgar Bridge. On the bank of the Velký Vajgar pond, there is a swimming area consisting of a swimming pool and an outdoor water park. You will find two indoor swimming pools, a sauna, a gym, a solarium and a hairdresser. In the outdoor water park, visitors can enjoy a large recreational pool heated by a solar system, a toboggan, a wild river, massage jets, a water mushroom and a children's wading pool. There is also a sunbathing lawn, a beach volleyball court, tennis courts, a restaurant on the terrace and refreshments. The two narrow-gauge lines in Jindřich Hradec are a unique technical monument. The first track from 1897 on the route Jindřichův Hradec – Nová Bystřice is 33 km long and leads through a picturesque landscape of forests, meadows and ponds called Czech Canada. The second track from Jindřichov Hradec to Obratán, from 1906, measures 46 km and runs between wooded hills. In the summer season, regular motor and steam trains depart from the station in Jindřichov Hradec on both lines. Today's Jindřichův Hradec, with its history, cultural and historical monuments and the panorama of the castle and chateau above two ponds, is one of the most beautiful Czech cities. Every year, it attracts countless visitors with its charm.
